ZuriWorks for Healthy Living|Green Smoothies: Enjoy the Green Side-Eye, You Deserve It

Green smoothies weren’t always a part of my diet. About eight months ago, I decided to add them to my daily regime because my whole body was depleted of vitamins and nutrients, and I needed to rebuild. High dose chemotherapy does that sometimes. I started researching natural ways to replenish my body with the vitamins and minerals I needed. Besides, I needed a way to incorporate more fruits and vegetables in my diet without spending half my day in the kitchen chopping and cutting and the other half of my day chewing.  Green smoothies, or the green monster, as the smoothies are sometimes referred to, proved to be the perfect solution for me.

Ok. If you haven’t had a green smoothie before, don’t be afraid. Most people are turned off by the color. Greens are green because of chlorophyll, which is good for your blood. Don’t be turned off by the color. Think of the green smoothie as your green-eyed monster, in a good way, the more you drink them, the more people will look at you with green eyes because you’ll have great skin and hair.

Everyday, after my workout, I prepare a green smoothie. It’s usual a combination of leafy green vegetables (kale, spinach, Swiss chard, collard greens, parsley) fruit (strawberries, bananas, grapes, pineapples, apples, pears, oranges), and a full scoop of Amazing Grass Super Green Super Food, a scoop provides me with an extra kick of vitamins and minerals. Leafy greens are rich source of concentrated vitamins like K (prevents blood from clotting), C (helps keep your skin stay firm and helps keep your hair healthy and beautiful), and E (works with vitamin K to keep your skin glowing and hair healthy as you age), and many of the B vitamins (which are good for heart health; increase metabolism, enhances human system, helps energize you and rebuilds cells). Leafy greens are also a great source of minerals like iron, calcium, potassium, and magnesium. They are also rich in fiber, an important tool for weight loss and weight maintenance.

Just preparing them makes me feel like I am doing the right thing for my body. My doctors like the results too (before beginning any diet change check with your primary care physician). It is well documented that adding more fruits and vegetables, especially leafy greens ones, is good for your health. A Harvard-based Nurse’s Health Study and Health Professionals Follow-up Study found that the higher the average in-take of fruits and vegetables the lower chances of developing cardiovascular disease, lower your cancer risk, lower your chances of gaining weight, and a ton of other diseases. Besides, all the great long-term, far off benefits of drinking a green smoothie a day, there are immediate and daily benefits:  You’ll begin to feel good about yourself, people are attracted to confidence, you’ll make new friends, and gain a legion of followers who want to know your secret. Honestly, I have a green smoothie everyday because I am vain and want to look good.

Unlike other beauty routines we as women take on, making a green smoothie a day is not very time-consuming. It takes less than 10 minutes. Also, they are easy to make and you need minimal equipment. Because of its power and versatility, Vitamix is the ideal tool for making a smoothie. Bur, don’t let not having a Vitamix stop you from getting that green glow. You can use a blender. Here are two of my favorite recipes:

Strawberry & Mixed Green Smoothie

  • 1 cup of almond milk
  • 1 cup of water
  • 1 cup of spinach
  • 1 cup of kale
  • 1 cup of (fresh or frozen) strawberries
  • 2 frozen bananas (peel and freeze bananas when they reach desired ripeness)

Place ingredients in blender in order listed and blend to desired consistency.

Or you can try these ingredients:

  • ½ cup of water
  • ½ cup of almond milk
  • ½ frozen pineapples
  • 1 ½ cups of green grapes
  • ¼ pear
  • ½ spinach
  • ½ Swiss chard
  • ½ kale

Place ingredients in blender in order listed and blend to desired consistency.

  1. The green smoothies diet was made by Robyn Openshaw, who is an expert in nutrition and a health educator. The diet doesn’t just involve drinking green smoothies, as you can continue to have other nutritious foods during the day to ensure you get a number of nutrients. Leafy green vegetables are the most nutritious foods, only one of the hardest foods to include into your diet simply because they aren’t so tasty. The green smoothies diet was made to help you incorporate these foods to your diet by blending vegetables with fruits along with other sweeteners to make them more fun.
