Madewell’s Fall 2012 Face: Solange Knowles
Since debuting her big chop in 2009, Solange Knowles has trail blazed her own lane in the fashion world. Breaking away from the shadows of mega star sis Beyonce, Solange is her own Indie+Pop+Soul “It Girl.” So it was no surprise when Madewell’s Lead Designer, Kin Ying Lee, decided to make her the face of the brand’s Fall 2012 How to Mix Well campaign. “She looks amazing in pretty much anything” says Lee.
The Madewell’s How to Mix Well campaign, in my opinion, is the perfect fit for Solange. And for anyone that follows this Texas girl’s “My Damn Blog” on Tumblr will concur. Just like mixing music; mixing patterns, colors and textures is her thing. Solange’s personal style is a lot like this collection: hipster, vintage, lady like & must have to die for pieces. Rocking a perfectly coiled afro and tangerine lips, she glows on the cover of the brand’s Fall style issue. The collection fun, flirty and a bit safe includes: a sleek (must have) Charade blazer with striped cardigan (in 3 colors), silky boy shirts and art dot shorts with matching polka-dot blazer and “the perfect” chambray shirt — just to name a few.
Great styling pulls these otherwise preppy pieces together for a youthful edgier look. Denim on denim with a pop of color, a floral skirt paired with a nautical striped pull over and denim jacket, stripes and polka dots with a touch of tribal irony and a sheep printed sweater with leopard flats. Color blocking, texture blending and of course-pattern mixing with pops of color is this Fall’s biggest style trend. My faves of the collection are the awesome tribal necklaces that are designed by Leeora Catalan which tops this collection and pulls it all together with an ironic spin. It’s the perfect blend of luxury and bad ass metal. My other faves are the silky boy shirts and Film Noir Suede pumps.
